Crazy enough to travel for food

My family do not eat beef due to religion, as we pray to Goddess of Mercy (Kuan Yin) at home. According to myths, Goddess of Mercy's father was transformed into a cow, thus, the story of why no beef for those who prays to Kuan Yin.

I dont know how I was introduced to this particular meat, but the humorous part was, I was told as long as I don't eat 'in front' (Goddess of Mercy's statue was in the main living room!), it's okay. And that was with my first McDonald Beef Burger, which i consumed inside the kitchen many many years ago. We used to have a 'Kitchen God' altar! hahaha. My belief is, as long as I am good, do not kill (okay, ants and mosquitoes do not qualify!), conscience is clear and I can sleep with peace of mind and I pray in my heart, Goddess of Mercy, will be 'merciful' to me. Hahaha. Hmm???

I have tried few versions of beef noodles, the first was in KL (not the one in Tengkat Tung Shin) when I was still in secondary school, probably, that's how I got started! I particularly like the thinly sliced beef which is so tender and sweet and 'just cooked'! Thus, my journey of beef noodles continues..

I was introduced to the King's beef noodles in Seremban town itself, as I used to frequent Seremban (south of Kuala Lumpur) for work on a weekly basis. Being a 'new kid in town', I obviously have to .. search for food. What else??? I will tell you more about King's the next time I go there and blog about the place.

Now, behind every successful man is a ..Queen! Yes, they are related, brother and sister. And, the 'old king' started in Seremban market itself. The father. Queen's is located in Kemayan, Seremban.

The Beef Noodles in Queen's is slightly different from King's, despite sharing the same recipe. The noodles are the same, home made, family secret recipe. No boric acid! You get more sesame seeds and peanuts from Queen's. Queen's has both air-conditioned and al-fresco (for those who smokes!!!) as its located in a new vicinity, unlike King's which is in the middle of town, intermediate shop lot concept.

You need to mix up everything so all the ingredients blends nicely with the sauce and noodles. It does not give you the 'gooey' taste but rather delicious with slices of beef that came with it, which is just cooked.

One can opt for the 'spare parts' i.e. intestines, etc. I cant comment much about this as I do not consume the internal 'organs', as beef does have a certain 'smell' to it, if you know what I mean. By the look of it, I think it should be good? Those of you who have tried it before, do share your comments.

Each bowl of noodles comes with beef balls. The beef balls here are just, okay. Nothing fantastic but reasonably okay. The below portion is for 3 pax, while the above 'spare parts' are for 2 pax.

No meal is complete without their famous ICE LEMON TEA - again another family secret! This is the BEST I have ever had. They would blend the ice as I can hear the blender making a huge 'fuss' with the ice. And what comes out of it, is sheer perfection! It has the right balance of tea, lemon and obviously, ice and is so, thirst quenching..what more on a hot day out in the sun! Nope, that's not the foam from the milk, but rather is from the ice that has been crushed. I wonder how they do that??
Between the 'Old King', 'Queen's' & 'King's, I always return to King's for sure, never fails. The only time it fails, is when King's is not open for business :( Let me warn you, King's is rather erractic as one just don't know if it's open or close. Thus, I have taken down King's mobile number, and I would call to ask if its open, then I would head on to Seremban town for a thirst quenching ice lemon tea with delicious beef noodles.
The contact for King's is: 012 - 654 9467 and he may sound rather harsh or rude on the phone, but that's just him.
Direction:
1) Take the 2nd toll exit to Seremban and go past Seremban General Hospital (on your right), you will come to a 'bridge'
2) As you approach the 'bridge', you will see a sign on your left that says "Pusat Bandaraya' (Town), take that turn down and you will merge with a main street
3) As you are on the main street, you will pass the only shopping mall (Parkson) on your right, and Caltex petrol station on your left.
4) At the 2nd traffic light, turn left (or look out for Standard Chartered Bank as your landmark) and you will come 'face to face' with a The Store Supermarket, directly opposite you.
5) Turn right at the light, and first right turn, and look out on your left, King's Restaurant, which is an intermediate lot (orange colored sign - could be a F&N sponsored signage).
Call before you go, otherwise, go Kemayan and try Queen's then post your comment. Ps: I shall upload the address next week.

I am actually quite a balance of both being a carnivore and herbivore and not just the former, as most friends would know. This is because I’d order anything with pork! Thus, friends would ask or tells me of places that serve nice pork, surprising? No.

My friend, Mia, who introduced Nasi Kandar ‘Ganja’ to me, had been telling me of this nice yummy roast pork somewhere in Overseas Union Garden, hence, the name ‘OUG Siew Yoke (Roast Pork)’. It was a Saturday mid-afternoon that we met up, and was guided all the way into OUG, which I had not gone in for years. I find the roast pork serves is not as moist and crispy as the other in KL, but, also good – I’d give this place a rating of 7.

In fact, I find the Roast Chicken is more delicious (if there's ever such a description!) than its roast pork. The chicken meat is so tender and moist yet roasted to perfection. You can see from the photo itself. Do order the roast chicken as I highly recommend this. I give the roast chicken a 9 rating.

No meal is complete without chicken rice itself. You have a choice of either plain white rice or ‘yau fun’ (literally translated as oily rice). The rice is normally cooked using chicken fats resulted from the chicken after being steamed. Thus, the rice not only has a fragrant whiff to it, but, the rice itself is soft and tasty. Yes, to go with the sauce. Yummy.
We also ordered a plate of vegetables with it and the whole meal for four, inclusive of drinks, costs around RM30-36. Btw, all are ‘small eaters’!

It is a corner coffee shop located in a row of single storey shops amidst a housing area. You can easily finds this place as I noticed that this seemed to be kind of a ‘main road’ as most cars drives through this road after a few turnings. As you are approaching the shop, another landmark easily noticed, is the Four Faced Buddha Temple next to it.

Check out for the address the next time you are in the blog. I cant promise you when I can get the address tho'!

One of the most popular breakfasts in Malaysia amongst the multi-races is no other than Nasi Lemak. Nasi Lemak is basically, plain rice cooked in coconut milk ala ‘santan’, thus, enriching the rice with..cholesterol! But is delicious.

You can have a choice of plain white rice if you are concern of your diet?? Anyhow, there are many places, stalls by the road side especially in the morning selling nasi lemak which varies from stall to stall. As a consumer, one is spoilt for choices as additional ‘side dishes’ i.e. fried chicken, curry chicken, fried egg, etc. Or, just plain old nasi lemak with anchovies, quartered egg, few slices of cucumber and some roasted peanuts topped off with some sambal chili.

There are not many places to eat around my office; therefore, I was pleasantly surprised that there is one such delicious stall nearby. This stall is actually located across Petronas petrol station, which is parallel to the Federal Highway, after the first toll, passed Subang Parade. You can see that there is a statue of a BIG BEAR and you can see Petronas from there.

This stall is known as ‘Nasi Lemak Petronas’ as it is located near Petronas petrol station. It is open around 11ish till stock finishes. The usual crowd comes in the usual lunch break, and, there are not many tables or chairs, and the queue does get longer and longer. You get the whiff of nice fried chicken as you approach the stall, and there are choices of side dishes i.e. perfectly fried egg (see for yourself!), variety of vegetables, curry chicken, etc.

The specialty is the fried chicken, in my opinion, is not cheap, but seemed to be standard price for all nice yet delicious fried chicken, which is RM4-4.50 per piece. And the sambal is the ‘sweetish’ type as Muslims from east coast of Malaysia, especially in Kelantan, which seems to have sweet tooth. Oh yeah, and not too spicy for those who can’t take spicy food. So your meal may cost you around RM5 -6 per plate, and it depends on what you add on.

Dont think your GPS can track this place :)

Nasi Kandar is quite common in Malaysia and is normally sold in Indian Muslim Restaurants. One of the re-known Nasi Kandar in Malaysia is Nasi Kandar Kayu (NKK), which I know of a business friend, who will not eat from any other except for NKK. Maybe, I should buy this for the friend to try and am really curious to know what the outcome is. Look out for an update on this!

When I was first invited for lunch by a friend, for Nasi Kandar ‘Ganja’, I was like, ‘What?? Do they actually serve with Ganja?” Obviously, I went for it, and not regretted AT ALL. We had to go early to avoid the crowd as my friend cautions that the queue can get rather long, as long as a dragon’s length. Okay, half a dragon’s length. Not one dragon.

We were there by 12pm, and as we were approaching the place, without winding down the car’s window, I can get a strong whiff of nice fragrant fried chicken! I am not kidding. As in any Nasi Kandar Restaurant, you have a choice of white or beriyani rice, I opted for the latter (photo below) with no doubt, its fried chicken, cabbage and comes with a full egg and topped of with your choice of sauce curries i.e. chicken, fish. The meal costs me RM8. While my friend chose the former, RM6 with fried chicken, ladies fingers, cabbage and a bit of pickles.

Now comes the best part. Why-lah Nasi Kandar ‘Ganja’? Can you see the clump of ‘stuff’ on your left, next to the chicken? THIS IS THE BEST STUFF aka ‘Ganja’. It is actually the leftover or crispness of the chicken which they dish out from the bottom of the big wok, not the Chinese Tai Wok, literally translated as Big Trouble. Ha-ha.

Go check it out at:

Restoran Raihan Nasi Kandar
5 Jalan Penggawa U1/75
Batu 3, Eight Industrial Park
40150 Shah Alam

They are only close once a month, which is last Sunday of each month.

Mei Keng Fatt Seafood Restaurant not only dishes out great food but prices are reasonable for the portion or sizes one gets. This is obvious from the size of the crab claw of the Australia Mud Crab! cooked Marmite Honey style. As you can see, the marmite honey sauce is not just a well combination amount of marmite & honey, but the sauce itself is cooked to thicken to the right consistency. You get a slight ‘saltish’ of marmite and the sweetness of honey, and what can you do with the sauce that is on the plate? Obviously, laps it up with the cucumber garnishing that is being served together for that whole purpose! Do not miss this dish when you are there – if there is no Australia Mud Crab, local meat crab is just as good lah.

We also order the Sweet and Spicy version, which is also well combined with the amount of beaten egg, chilly and tomato sauce with a tinge of ‘spiciness’. The Australian Mud Crab was also used for this dish. The amount of sauce is generous and goes well with steamed bun which will just soaks up the sauce. And as you bite into the bun, which many of you have had that experience with other restaurants, you can feel the softness of the bun and the sauce oozing out! Between the two versions of crab, I personally prefer the Marmite Honey Style, not that I don’t like the other version, but it was a bit too much for me to do justice to that version.

The total cost for the two versions of Australia Mud Crab, costs RM90/kg totals at RM460 and a portion of Chinese Buns at RM20..

Obviously our meal wasn’t very healthy but full of cholesterol. However, one should worry less, eat prudently (as in the balance of ‘unhealthy’ but actual food!) and exercise like crazy after that! I was just joking, about the exercise like crazy part, but do exercise. The other delicious dish ordered was Crispy Fried Squid which is being dipped in a mixture of batter of cornflour and flour itself (based on my cooking experience). I am sure there is something else, besides the addition of pepper and salt, or maybe, just maybe it’s the right balance, which I may not have gotten it right?? As I bite into the squid, I can feel the crunchiness, softness and sweetness of the squid. Not like some other places, where either it’s being dipped into too much batter or the squid is overcooked. I highly recommend this and it costs RM30 for the portion and size? Worth it.

Honestly speaking, I am not one to fancy anything that’s plain or tasteless like in bean curd or otherwise locally known as Taufoo. Thank God for creativity and innovation, that I am able to appreciate Taufoo that comes combined with egg, or pre-fried with other combination. Special Taste Home Made Bean Curd in Mei Keng Fatt is coated with beaten eggs prior to a quick short deep fry, which ultimately, gets combined with the special sauce with thinly sliced Chinese Mushroom and artificial Crab Sticks which are being stripped into pieces. The sauce itself wasn’t ‘starchy’ which resulted in it being thick! A simple dish like this costs RM20. I let you decide if the price is reasonable?

Deep Fried Crispy Pork Ribs is another dish that was ordered. My brother, BK, went ‘overboard’ ordering as it was a celebration of his elder son, Jie Han’s, whose 16th birthday falls on December 9. The ribs were tender and moist, that’s all I can describe. Why? I have to try at least a piece to be able to blog about the dish!, and I think, if I weren’t that filled up, better justice could be given to this. Personally, I think this dish is a bit high in price for RM36.

Finally, some greens after all the meat and seafood. This is, according to the bill (scroll for the bill at the end) is Fried Hongkong Butter Plant which is wrong, the ‘veg’ is right but definitely not fried! This is Hongkong Butter Plant in Superior Soup or ‘Seong Tong Lai Pak’ cooked with kei chi (gooseberry), which is believed to be good for the eye sight. The soup is pleasantly clear with a tinge of gooseberry sweetness, and some small pre-fried anchovies. While, the vegetable itself is ‘youthful’ literally translated from Chinese, or be otherwise known as tender or young. Ah, this was satisfying for the price of RM25.

What? There is some more food to come! I uttered in disbelief! I definitely can’t do justice to the following quack, errr, I meant 8 Variety Duck or known as ‘8 Poh Ngap’. It is braised and filled with light stuffing of Chinese herbs like tong kwai, etc serves with quartered hard boiled eggs. I will let you know how the dish is, if I do get to try it again. I guess it should be good as so far all the dishes I had, my earlier visits, were just as good. The '8 Poh' price is indeed at RM68! Too steep.

The final total bill for all the dishes, inclusive of appetizer and tea are as follows: Mei Keng Fatt Seafood Restaurant is located in:

No 1 Lorong Awan 6,
Kuala Ampang
68000 Selangor
Tel: 03-4256 6491 / 4257 3232

and its operating hours are:
11am - 230pm, and, 4pm - 12am
